How is this winter treating you so far? We had one real snow here in Arkansas on Christmas Eve (hello White Christmas!) and earlier this week! It’s been way too cold and last week there was a sudden temperature drop with freezing rain, and I found myself in a bit of a slip and slide situation leaving my favorite coffee shop (you should’ve seen my husband’s face...and my ankle!). Needless to say, I hope you’re having much better luck staying warm and safe so far this season!
Being born in the South (like basically next to the beach) I’ve had to learn how to embrace winter while also taking care of the first thing that feels the harsh effects of the cold...my skin! I usually have my skincare routine nailed down for the warmer months (I’ve got that glowing, dewy look down pat!). However, as soon as the temperature starts to drop and the air gets icy, my skin gets so dry and patchy it hurts! And my chapped lips? That is a whole different (painful) story!
I’ve compiled some of the best winter skincare tips (and even enlisted the help of a well-known skin guru!) to help you achieve your best skin yet, even despite the bitter cold. Read on, beauties!
The Bare Skin Basics
Between all the crazy weather variations this season throws our way, it’s important to take extra great care of your skin’s health so you look and feel your best! Today I’m sharing some simple yet amazing tips from Dove dermatologist Dr. Alicia Barba that will help you protect your skin even when it’s sub-zero outside.
Snow days, hot cocoa, and festive scarves aside, the worst of winter really sets in when your skin gets that terrible dry itch! Scaly, itchy skin can transcend past annoying and become damaging if left untreated...think eczema or psoriasis (yikes). Start your mornings off right with a hydrating cleanser to help you remove excess oils and dead cells while maintaining the right moisture balance in your skin.
Unless you have very oily skin, your skin deserves more attention than usual this time of year. It’s a good idea to use a heavier moisturizer during this season and treat your face to a nice mask once a week. For your nighttime routine, Dr. Barba suggests washing your face, applying a retinol cream, and following up with moisturizer. Finally, don’t forget about the rest of your body and moisturize all those covered areas that are usually neglected, such as your neck, chest and hands.
Another fantastic skin-saving piece of advice is to consider investing in a humidifier for your bedroom (or space where you spend the most time). They are great for keeping moisture in the air and soothe your dry skin all year round. Dewey past December? You bet!
Cold Weather Really Is The Pits
Speaking of neglected areas, did you know that underarm skin is ultra sensitive and often overlooked? According to Dr. Barba, textures and fabrics in sweaters, undergarments and t-shirts can also irritate the skin so you need a product that can keep you hydrated and protected underneath all those layers.
Dove Advanced Care Antiperspirant provides 48-hour odor and wetness protection, plus added skin care benefits for softer, smoother underarms. I’ve personally been using it since it was first released because I couldn’t find anything good enough for my sensitive skin and let me tell you, it’s everything you could ever want from an antiperspirant! I love its fresh scent and how light it feels on my skin. Just a quick swipe and Dove Advanced Care moisturizes my underarm skin and keeps sweat at bay, all day. Thumbs up in my book.
Make Chapped Lips a Thing of the Past
If you guys are anything like me, nothing ruins my day like dry, cracking lips. This is super common during this time of year, and while it obviously doesn’t look great and feels awful, many people don’t treat it right away. They suffer through it, or apply useless gloss or balms that offer just minutes of relief without actually fixing the issue.
Chronic chapped lips through the season can cause cracking, bleeding, and peeling...none of which are cute or comfortable. If you want smooth and soft lips, applying a lip mask at night and continuously through the day using an ultra-moisturizing repair balm made to treat damaged, chapped lips can do wonders for you! Try using balms that actually cure dry, cracked lips with seriously soothing ingredients.
Don’t Toss Your Sunscreen Out Just Because It’s Below Freezing
We might not be on a beach basking in the warm sun (ugh, I wish, right!), but that doesn’t mean you should toss your SPF in the back of the cabinet. Winter sun and snow glare can be a terrible combination for your skin. Even if you spend most of your day indoors, remember that UV rays are not properly filtered by windows and you can still get sun damage if you’re sitting for prolonged periods in direct sunlight.
Applying sunscreen every single day and even switching to a moisturizing sunscreen in the cold months will be greatly appreciated by your skin (and dermatologist). In addition to that, always remember to check the weather forecast before leaving home and dress appropriately because windburn is real, ladies! Layers, fleece, scarves, and hats will be your best friend this season (merino wool, anyone?).
Just Keep Drinking (H2O, that is!)
Guys, this is the fundamental KEY to maintaining healthy skin year-round. Trust me, I know drinking water is the last thing you think about when choosing a beverage in this cold weather. It is way more tempting to keep a hot coffee or mug of cocoa by your side than a tall glass of agua. However, not drinking enough water can dry your skin even more and we don’t want that, do we? So chug, chug!
I always keep my BPA-free water bottles within reach and in view so I don’t forget about them. You can even download one of those apps for your smartphone/smartwatch to track your water intake and make reaching your hydration goals even easier!
Remember, You’re Not in Hibernation
Finally, while I know that cuddling up with your pups and watching movies bundled up on the couch sounds way more appealing than working out, you should definitely make an effort to exercise during the coldest months too. It will help you get rid of toxins and get that glowy skin that we all love! Plus, there are so many online videos and routines you can follow at home with minimal equipment so no excuses!
Remember that skin care continues post workout, too. Take it down a notch and avoid super hot water when taking a shower. I know this is tough when it’s freezing outside, but the heat from your shower water will only strip away your skin’s natural oils. Stick to warm or lukewarm water and make your showers no longer than five minutes.
Wrapping It Up Like Your Favorite Cozy Scarf
Taking care of your skin is really important all year, but winter is the best time to repair damage from the summer months, so take advantage of this opportunity to pamper yourself! Simple actions such as moisturizing, wearing SPF every day, and drinking enough water can positively impact your body and your skin. Furthermore, you shouldn’t forget to care for your underarms in order to prevent irritation and dark marks! Check out Dove Advanced Care Antiperspirant online here.
If you’re anything like me and have skin that’s in need of some serious TLC this winter, follow these tips and let me know what else would you add. I’d love to hear everyone’s favorite skin care tips that they can’t live without!
Happy Tuesday, gorgeous ladies!
